Growing Minds, Growing Gardens

At The Willows State School, our school garden has become a thriving learning space where students connect with sustainability, design thinking and real-world learning experiences through the Technologies curriculum. What began as a small garden initiative has continued to grow into a whole-school project that supports student learning from Prep to Year 6.

Our garden provides students with opportunities to develop practical skills, teamwork, responsibility and an understanding of where food comes from. Students actively participate in planting, maintaining and harvesting produce while exploring sustainability and food and fibre production through authentic hands-on learning experiences. The garden supports students to build confidence, problem-solving skills and a sense of pride as they care for and contribute to a shared community space.

Students also use produce grown in the garden during cooking experiences in Technologies lessons, allowing them to make meaningful connections between growing, harvesting and preparing food. These authentic learning opportunities help students understand sustainable practices and how garden produce can be used purposefully within everyday life.

The project has expanded significantly thanks to the generous support of our school and wider community. Families, staff, local organisations and community partners have contributed their time, resources and expertise to help strengthen and grow the program. We are incredibly grateful for the support provided through the Pick of the Crop program and Global Competence Fund, which helped establish key garden infrastructure and provided opportunities for students to engage in hands-on food and sustainability learning.

Today, the garden continues to provide engaging learning opportunities including lunchtime garden clubs, classroom investigations, sustainability projects and opportunities for students to harvest produce used within our school community. The space has become more than just a garden. It is a place where students learn, collaborate, create and grow together.
