Defence School Mentor

Within our school community, the Defence Mentor provides assistance to defence students and their families, and raises awareness of the unique needs of these families due to the military lifestyle.  The Defence Mentor assists and supports defence students to develop their friendships, self-confidence and resilience.

The Defence Mentor supports defence students and their families in four key areas:

  • Welcoming
  • Integrating
  • Absence Support
  • Farewelling

The Defence Mentor:

  • Assists families and students to become familiar with our school and our facilities via tours
  • Co-ordinates welcome/farewell and friendship activities
  • Monitors personal and social issues and refers where necessary
  • Transitions defence students and their families to and from the school by actively assisting with welcoming, integrating and farewelling
  • Supports defence students at school during times of parental absence (due to deployment, training and exercise) from the home for service requirements
  • Liaises with students, parents, teachers, support staff and administration, and sources information for families when requested within the school framework
  • Assists with accessing external to school tutoring where eligible​

A variety of activities have been designed and are provided to support students within the school community.  These may include but are not limited to:

  • In class assistance
  • Kids Club
  • Specialised support and activities during parental absence
  • Parent morning teas
  • Special services on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day

Defence Community Organisation

The Defence Community Organisation (DCO) works closely with the DSM and other school staff to assist defence families in the Townsville area. DCO provides a range of professional services for defence members and their families. For further information, call: DCO Defence Family Helpline 1800 624 608 This service is available 24 hours.
