Inter-school sport

Students in years 5 and 6 play sport either at outside venues or at the school on Thursday afternoon. For students who are very skilled in a particular sport, there are inter-school competitions. Teachers organise a variety of games and activities to help students develop their sports skills.

They also practise for the next season’s sports, so students can develop their skills and be ready for inter-school sports.

The inter-school sports that The Willows generally participate in are:
  • Hockey
  • Cricket
  • Rugby League
  • Netball
  • Football (soccer)
  • Touch
  • Australian rules
  • Softball
  • Basketball

Inter-school sport usually costs around $45.00 for the season, which covers bus fares, use of the grounds and registration fees. Students leaving the school for sport must wear full school uniform, including a hat. All students playing sport must wear sports shoes.

It is the policy of Queensland School Sport that only children in years 5 and 6 who are 10 years of age or older participate in structured competitive sport. Younger children participate in a games skills program within their Physical Education (PE) lesson which prepares them for later involvement in inter-school sport.

This school is involved with inter-school sport and decisions about sports to be played are negotiated between teachers and students. Students participating in inter-school sport often need to travel to a sporting venue by bus. To reduce time spent in money collection, and to ensure that no financial losses are incurred, students are required to pay fees in one lump sum prior to the commencement of the season. Parents and students are expected to adhere to the code of behaviour for players and spectators.
